From Loreto to the Stars: Celebrating National Science Week

15 August 2025

This week at Loreto College Ballarat, we proudly celebrated National Science Week, led by our talented Year 12 students Sophia Dalton and Madeline Sutton, who curated a diverse program of activities to engage and inspire our school community.

The week began with a very special guest: astrophysicist and past pupil Emma Ryan-Weber (Class of 1994). Now a professor at Swinburne University, Emma captivated students with her remarkable journey in science, from her early days at Loreto to being part of the team that discovered the Leo T galaxy. She reflected on her time at the College, fondly remembering when Mr Stowe began teaching in her Year 7 science class. Emma’s visit was a powerful reminder of where a passion for science can lead.

Mid-week, students put their problem-solving skills to the test in a science-themed escape room challenge, working together to solve puzzles that encouraged critical thinking and teamwork.

To conclude the celebrations, we welcomed Kirstyn Hall from the Ballarat Tech School, who shared valuable insights into STEM pathways and her own professional journey. She encouraged students to take initiative, pursue hands-on learning, and build connections within the STEM community.

Congratulations to Sophia and Madeline for their outstanding leadership. Their efforts not only made Science Week a memorable experience but also inspired many students to explore the exciting opportunities that STEM offers both now and in the future.
