We are proud to share that Mother Gonzaga Barry ibvm has been posthumously inducted into the 2025 Victorian Honour Roll of Women in the Trailblazer category, in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to education in Australia.

Mother Gonzaga Barry’s legacy as a pioneer of women’s education exemplifies these values, a woman far ahead of her time, whose work continues to resonate 150 years after the arrival of the Loreto Sisters in Australia.
A Visionary in Education
Mother Gonzaga Barry’s achievements laid the foundations for equitable, holistic, and high-quality education for girls and women across Victoria. Among her many accomplishments:
- Founded Loreto College Ballarat and led the expansion of Loreto schools to Portland and Melbourne.
- Navigated complex church politics, secured property for educational institutions, reformed curricula, and strongly advocated for social justice.
- Pioneered early childhood education in Victoria, playing a leading role in the establishment of the kindergarten movement.
- Established Teacher Training Colleges in Ballarat and South Melbourne to empower women to become professional educators.
- Founded St Mary’s College at the University of Melbourne, Australia’s first residential college for women.
- Advocated for equal access to academic education for girls, ensuring their opportunities matched those of boys.
- Promoted holistic education, integrating the arts, sciences, and humanities to nurture both intellect and character.
The honour was accepted on her behalf at the 2025 ceremony by Felicity Knobel (Assistant Principal: Faith & Identity, Loreto College Ballarat), Michelle McCarty (Director of Mission and Student Leadership, Loreto Toorak), and Eva Cummins, a Year 9 student.
Their presence reflected the intergenerational impact of Mother Gonzaga Barry’s vision, one that continues to shape lives across the Loreto network in Australia and beyond.
As we mark 150 years since the Loreto Sisters first arrived in Australia, this recognition celebrates a lasting legacy of educational excellence, faith, and the unshakable belief in the power of women’s leadership.
