Championing Change for Women and Girls

22 October 2025

This week, Loreto College Ballarat welcomed Women for Change; an organisation committed to transforming the lives of Afghan women both in Afghanistan and Australia.

The event was organised by the Mavericks, a student led group who empower one another to be changemakers on gender-based issues that we see in our community and across the globe. One issue these students have been focusing on is raising awareness of women and girls who have been denied basic rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over in 2021.

The Mavericks were fortunate to hear from Lida, a passionate advocate for women in Afghanistan and founder of Women for Change, who actively work for girls to access education since being deprived of this right by the Taliban. Lida spoke about how powerful the Mavericks can be to lift the voices of these women and girls ensuring that this issue is not forgotten about in our changing world. The Mavericks will continue to work with Women for Change to raise awareness and strive to be advocates for gender equality in our world.
