The Loreto College Library Resource Centre provides an information service for staff and students in a welcoming atmosphere and in accordance with the Loreto Mission Statement. It supports the curriculum, co-curricular and recreational interests of the school community by providing a rich learning environment and promoting a love of literature.
Staff The Library Resource Centre is staffed by: Mrs Lyn Browne, Head of Library Mrs Lorraine McGregor, Library Officer Mrs Robyn O'Keefe, Library Officer Mrs Leonie Darken, Library Officer
Physical Facilities The Library Resource Centre at Loreto College, Ballarat is situated on the North East corner of the school opposite the lake. The LRC caters for all students from Year 7- Year 12. Library Hours 8.15 a.m.- 4.30 p.m. daily (later by arrangement) The Library Resource Centre is open for one week of each term school holiday period for all year levels. Use of the Library Resource Centre All members of the Loreto College Community including staff, students and parents may borrow materials from the library. The effective use of resources in the learning program is facilitated by access to networked information systems and services managed by the Library Resource Centre. Borrowing The loan period is generally 2 weeks for books, although there are some books on overnight loan or extended loan. Periodicals, audio-tapes and cassette recorders are available for overnight loan. VCE students may borrow a laptop on overnight loan. Overnight loans are available for borrowing from 3.30 p.m. They must be returned before 9.00 a.m. the next day. DVDs, videotapes and pictures are not for loan, except during the school day. When an item is overdue, borrowing rights are suspended. Letters are sent to parents periodically. Students are required to pay for lost or damaged items. Items may be reserved. New items are placed on display as soon as they are processed. Number of items to be borrowed at any one time
Photocopying The LRC has a photocopier available for students. Students must pay for their own photocopy card. Payment for single photocopies is not acceptable. Library Access Students may be booked into the library as part of a class or individual students (up to 8 per class) may be given a note by a teacher to use the library during class time. VCE students have free access to the library during study periods. Library study periods must be used for quiet study or reading. Library Catalogue You can access the Library Catalogue, AIMS, from all computers throughout the school and from your home computer. Library Technology Use the sites linked from the library page if you are looking for any of the categories listed. It can save you heaps of time! Remember that Internet sites are also included on the Library catalogue. Search for them under subject. Don’t forget the online resources that provide a wealth of information. These are only available in the library. Audio-visual resources include DVD's, videos, audio-cassettes, slides, posters, charts, maps and kits. They can be found using the Aims catalogue. DVD players, CD players, video cameras, digital cameras, slide projectors, data projectors, screens and other hardware may also be borrowed for use within the school. Many of the classrooms have a television, DVD and VCR facilities available. There are electronic screens in the Gonzaga Barry Centre and in the Hall. Library Promotions The Library Resource Centre is involved in a number of celebrations and activities during the school year. Children’s Book Week is celebrated in conjunction with the English department. All students participate in story readings, class activities and competitions designed to foster their interest in reading and increase their knowledge of Australian Children’s Literature. The Library participates in Asia week and the History challenge in collaboration with Humanities, in Literature Week together with the English department, and other special days. The LRC presents regular displays of students’ work, new materials and themes of particular interest that reflect and enhance the school culture. A Library newsletter is published periodically and recommended reading lists are compiled for holiday reading Student achievements and interests are recognised by acknowledging any newspaper reports about them and placing them on our "In the news" board. Current Information and Issues The Library Resource Centre provides a range of resources to assist students searching for current information. Students are able to access
The Library Resource Centre subscribes to the following newspapers throughout the year, including holidays. These papers are also available online (see Newspapers and other media online). Back copies of these papers are kept for 6 months to enable students to photocopy articles. Magazines provide recent information relevant to many of your assignment research topics. Current magazines are available for overnight loan. The Library keeps back copies of some of these magazines for up to 5 years. Since January 2000, magazine articles have been allocated subject headings, which you can find by searching the catalogue. See below for the full listing of subscriptions.
